The NGA-Subduction (“NGA-Sub”) project is one in a series of Next Generation Attenuation (NGA) projects directed towards database and ground-motion model development for applications in seismic-demand characterization. Whereas prior projects had targeted shallow crustal earthquakes in active tectonic regions (NGA-West1 and NGA-West2) and stable continental regions (NGA-East), NGA-Sub is the first to address specifically subduction zones. Subduction zone earthquakes are a dominant source of seismic hazard in many regions globally, including the Pacific Northwest region of the United States and Canada. The ground motion models are based on processed recordings and supporting source, path, and site metadata from Alaska, Cascadia, Central America and Mexico, Japan, New Zealand, South America, and Taiwan.
NGA-Sub was funded by FM Global, US Geological Survey, California Department of Transportation, and Pacific Gas & Electric Company, and was coordinated through the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center. The development of this portal was funded by the NHR3, California Department of Transportation, and Pacific Gas & Electric Company.
The NGA-Sub project entails extensive technical interactions among 37 individuals from many different organizations around the world. Their efforts and dedications are gratefully acknowledged. Further information on the project is available and in Bozorgnia et al. (2021 – Earthquake Spectra).
